Wood splitters, also known as log splitters, are a variety of devices or machines designed to split a chunk of wood as it was cut from a fallen tree in order to make it ready for burning in the wood stove.
They could be divided into hand tools - mauls, wedges, axes and power splitters. Power splitters can be divided into gas and electric powered (most of which use hydraulics for the splitting action). There is also a small group of splitters powered by a PTO (Power Take Off) from a tractor and acorn splitters that use screwing action of a specially designed cone.
Power splitters can also be divided into horizontal, (where the log to be split lays horizontally) and vertical.
